IBM Haifa Research Lab, HRL (IBM), is a subsidiary of IBM Israel and part of IBM’s Research Division. It has been active for over 30 years in research and develo pment to advance IBM’s development capabilities and products. The Distributed Middleware group is part of HRL’s Software and Services which is involved in developing technology and software to exploit advances in computing infrastructure for the benefit of the end user in the following areas: dependable middleware and scalable messaging technology, business optimization and transformation, Service Oriented Architecture tools and modelling, application portfolio management, complex event processing, and model based tooling for architecture, execution and testing with focus on telecom services. The web environment has amplified traditional server requirements - such as scalability, availability, and manageability - to unprecedented levels. The Distributed Middleware group develop technologies that address these challenges. The Distributed Middleware group focuses on clustering middleware for dependable solutions and high throughput messaging technologies for IBM middleware. Activities include the development of a core infrastructure for high availability (DCS, Distribution and Consistency Services) and for high throughput messaging, both part of WebSphere. The group is working on real-time messaging technologies as part of the GridCC EU project. Research in algorithms for high availability and high throughput, low latency messaging in scale-out multi-tier environments is also part of the group’s research activities.
